Santa Barbara's Upham B&B: A Great Escape for the Holidays

If you're looking to get out of Culver City for Thanksgiving, be sure to check out this charming B&B, which was built in 1871.

The holidays will soon be upon us, and if you’re like us, you may want to celebrate by getting out of Culver City. I’d like to pay homage to one of my favorite spots to visit: Santa Barbara.

This charming community is one of my favorite getaways—largely because the din of big-city life is virtually absent, there are a myriad of things to do and many fine-dining options, and one of my favorite B&Bs is situated there.

The Upham is one of my favorite places to stay, nestled near the hub of activity on State Street. This B&B was erected in 1871, and its lineage still takes me back to historical times when things were simpler.

Our cottage overlooked the sprawling grounds, where guests dawdled in the fading daylight, sipping wine, reading their Kindles or just taking time to count the sun-baked leaves falling from the sycamore trees.

Kudos to General Manager Jan Martin Winn, whose hospitality makes you feel like a long-lost friend. In this age of anonymous desk clerks, she and her staff go out of their way to accommodate your needs, and make you feel like your business is appreciated.

Dining options are plentiful. If you don’t feel like leaving the Upham, check out Louie’s California Bistro, celebrating its 20th year—we particularly enjoy their patio that overlooks the splendor on Sola Street.

Nearby is the happening Ca Dario, which sports fine Italian cuisine, and an impressive wine list. Although the seating arrangement is quite tight, the food was innovative and on par with some of the many restaurants I’ve .

Also recommended is the ever-popular Opal, right on State Street with its eclectic offering of fusion delights.

The Upham offers many value-added packages, making a holiday stay all the more affordable for travelers. Celebrate the Upham’s 140th year, with a third night stay for free, with the stay of two nights.

Included in this package is a complimentary bottle of champagne, commemorative glasses to take home, and the Upham’s Hotel History book.  Many other travel packages are available on their web site as well.

With the holidays coming up shortly, you owe it to yourself to check out this fine establishment, or it’s more intimate sister—The Country House—located right across the street.
