Recycled Wares Make Beautiful Music

Wanting to bring new life to discarded items, Laurie Najim creates wind chimes from scraps.

The wind-driven, soothing melody of clanking cutlery draped in the breezy archway of Laurie Najim's market canopy draws curious onlookers like flies to an old-fashioned American pie.

The chimes are made from discarded items Najim has picked up from garage sales, friends and even the side of the curb.  Working as a buyer in the corporate garment world for nearly 25 years, Najim said she's got a flare for style, and enjoys it when people notice the little nuances of her work--say, a gold knife dangling amid a collection of silver.

The unique chimes immediately catch the eye while their song harkens passersby to a slower, quieter time.  For Najim, who is also a Reiki master, the whimsical sound acts as a healing agent.

"Many people that have worked in sound therapy say that anytime there is a tinkling that stirs up the energy, it creates a more positive flow," Najim said.  "I've had several customers come back and tell me how they've transformed their backyards because of this sound. It's just so uplifting for them."

The inspiration to use recycled wares came with her mother's "waste not, want not" motto.

"I've always had a passion for recycling," Najim said. "My mom was a Depression baby so we washed our Saran wrap and plastic bags.  There are so many people that do without, so I'd rather give something more use than I could give it."
