Plastic Prompts DiGiorno, CPK Pizza Recalls

Nestlé USA has issued a voluntary recall on some pizza products.

Thousands of frozen pizzas have been recalled because spinach used on the pies was contaminated with bits of sharp, brittle plastic, several media agencies have reported.

Nestlé, which owns the popular brands, announced the recall Thursday.

The recall covers California Pizza Kitchen's crispy thin-crust white pizza and its limited-edition grilled chicken with Cabernet sauce. The DiGiorno products affected are the crispy flatbread pizza, Tuscan-style chicken, and DiGiorno bianca/white pizza, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A small number of consumers complained that they had found small fragments of plastic on the CPK Crispy Thin Crust White pizza, according to the Nestlé statement posted on U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.

The pizzas were produced in February and March of this year, according to CBS News. That means consumers should check their freezers for pizzas with these productions codes:

Consumers who purchased the recalled CPK and DiGiorno pizzas should not eat them. Instead, they should call Nestle USA Consumer Services via telephone at 800-456-4394 or via email at nestlepizza@casupport.com. The line will be open Saturday from noon until 5 p.m. Pacific Time and Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

Nestle is offering replacement coupons to customers who bought the affected pizzas.
