The kick-off rally for the Susan G Komen 2012 breast cancer 'Race for the Cure' was held at the country's only "Pink" store in Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza last week.

In anticipation of the March 24 breast cancer race, which will take place at Dodger Stadium, a kick-off rally for the Susan G Komen 2012 breast cancer ‘Race for the Cure’ took place last Thursday at the country’s only “Pink” store in Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

The event was also designed to help raise awareness about breast cancer among minority communities.

Megan Schachtebeck told Patch that the location for the kick-off served as an outlet to place the resources in the direct path of the community that is suffering the most from breast cancer.

“While breast cancer is the most common cancer among Latino women in Los Angeles County, 27.7% of Latino women in LA County 40 years or older have not had a mammogram in the past two  years,” Schactebeck said, adding that as a result women are being  diagnosed with breast cancer at later stages, and dying from it. At Thursday night’s event, SGKLA offered free mammograms as well as a chance to ask questions to Dr. Dennis Holmes, chief breast surgeon and medical director at the Los Angeles Center for Women’s Health.
