Broadway Melodies at Culver City Historical Society Tonight

The Culver City Historical Society is hosting an evening featuring the history, music, songs and stories from MGM's Broadway Melody musical movies.

As part of its general meeting tonight at 7 p.m., the Culver City Historical Society will host a musical evening featuring the songs and music from MGM’s Broadway Melody musical movies produced between 1929 and 1944.

The event will take place in the Veteran’s Memorial Multipurpose room at 4117 Overland Ave. and will be hosted by tenor Winston Gieseke and pianist Stephen Fry.

The pair will serve up a musical and narrative review of original songs from the popular series of Broadway Melody film productions made in the “Heart of Screenland.”   Among the well-known and loved tunes will be renditions of, “You Were Meant for Me,” “Wedding of the Painted Doll,”  “All I Do is Dream of You,” “Temptation” and  “Singin’ in the Rain.”

In a release issued by the Culver City Historical Society, the organization noted that The Broadway Melody of 1929 was the first sound film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture; was one of the first musicals to feature a Technicolor sequence; was the first musical released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayor, and the first all-talking musical.

Tonight’s program is free and the public is invited to participate. The entrance to the Multi-Purpose Room is through the back of the building near the parking lot, and through the ARC space.  For more information, please call the Society at (310) 253-6941 or inquire by e-mail at info@CulverCityHistoricalSociety.org.  Also, visit the CCHS website at:  www.culvercityhistoricalsociety.org  for updates.
