World Peace Day Celebration Welcomes the Locals

A Wednesday celebration toasts The Peace Project's Operation Rise—the goal to give more than 10,000 crutches to war amputees in Sierra Leone.

In honor of World Peace Day and The Peace Project's goal to give more than 10,000 crutches to amputees in Sierra Leone, Gallery 9 held a one-day extravaganza Wednesday featuring live art, a food truck, mural artists and sumptuous desserts. Termed Operation Rise, the goal to give crutches to war amputees in Sierra Leone is the brainchild of Gallery 9 owner Lisa Schultz, who was inspired last year by Pep Bonet's photographs of Sierra Leone's amputee soccer team. —an international creative community with the goal of creating universal peace—was then born, with Operation Rise following this year.

Schultz is in Sierra Leone distributing the crutches today in celebration of World Peace Day, reports the Los Angeles Times. So far she has raised a little more than half of the $250,000 that it will require to pay for the batch of crutches.

Today's event included a children's story hour, the Nacho Truck for lunch, free giveaways and DJ Astro from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
