The Great Escape: An Evening of Dinner and the Theatre

Moms deserve a break every now and then, after all the work they do taking care of everyone else.

We moms spend so much of our time taking care of those around us, it’s easy to neglect taking care of ourselves. This weekly feature will showcase  ways moms can take a little break from their routine, unplug and unwind a little, right here in Culver City.

Culver City is home to one of Los Angeles’ great intimate theatre spaces, the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and also to one of the most well-respected restaurants in town, Fraiche. Together, they’re going to make a wonderful evening out for a Mom who’s given her all.

Originally a movie house built in the 1940s, The Kirk Douglas Theatre was lovingly restored and transformed into a live performance space and re-opened in 2004. For years before that it had sat empty and neglected, which is hard to believe when you see what a treasure it is.

Now part of the Center Theatre Group, which includes the Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center, the Kirk Douglas Theatre has a great season ahead and it would make a wonderful evening’s entertainment for a mom looking to escape temporarily.

In fact, Monday, March 21, previews begin for a new play, The Wake, by Lisa Kron, directed by Leigh Silverman. Tickets cost between $20-$45.

 Fraiche

While escaping, a little dinner at Fraiche is in order. Frank Bruni of the New York Times called the menu “…abundantly flavorful food cooked with skill and sense…” And what more can you ask for?

Appetizers include beet gazpacho and house-made agnolotti, as well as a foie gras terrine with pomegranate. There are pastas, salads and entrees including Kobe beef cheeks and a duck confit, plenty to choose from for a truly great escape from the ordinary.

The setting is gorgeous, the atmosphere is warm and inviting – a perfect way to spend time in anticipation of a great show, which is, conveniently, within walking distance. Dinner entrees run from $18 to $28.
