Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration

On Saturday, January 14, Mustardseed Ministries Int’l (MMI) and Culver-Palms United Methodist Church present their 7th Annual Martin Luther King holiday celebration, “Drumming for Justice.” It will be held from 2-4pm in the Fellowship Hall at 4464 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City.

This all ages program begins with “Healthy Soul” refreshments and will engage everyone in activities
intended to help identify ways of furthering Dr. King’s mission of justice, racial harmony, peace and freedom from poverty. Musical inspiration includes the CPUMC children’s choir; Agape Spiritual Center’s Youth Ministry drummers
and Sage, CPUMC’s house band. Author /WordBeat
poet, Charlotte Sista C Ferrell will open the “Voices of Dreamers” program segment with a mixed media poem inspired by Dr. King’s Drum Major for Justice speech.
Author/Poet Shirley Simmons will also present in this segment along with 2 members of the Southern California Storyteller’s group.

Collage and poem-making activities led by creative youth and adult facilitators will involve participants in a meaningful exploration of contemporary social justice issues. A unique music-step segment will provide
children and adults with opportunities to rev up their ‘justice tempo’ and identify ways they can keep Dr. King’s mission alive.

Aside from enjoying Healthy Soul refreshments, participants will experience a display by Rev. Carolyn Wilkins, author of the Greedy Mouth book series and hear a short presentation of tasty ways to reverse the current national epidemic of childhood obesity. MMI Director, Charlotte Ferrell, is also a Registered Dietitian who will display the paradigm shift happening in soul food
since the traditional high fat, high sugar foods common at civil rights gatherings in the 60’s.

Finally in concert with the King Family’s tradition of encouraging people to do a community service activity during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, we are inviting all guests and participants to bring a non-perishable food donation for a local food pantry. For more information please contact Charlotte at 310-562-6889 or mustseed@sbcglobal.net.
