Culver City Celebrates Bike Month

May is Bike Month and the Culver City Bicycle Coalition together with other community groups is planning events all month long.

Bike Month is a national promotion embraced by cities throughout the country. As cities develop new infrastructure to accommodate the growing numbers of cyclists, events such as Bike Month help encourage people to give cycling a try, or, for the experienced cyclist, it provides a new way to embrace their choice of transportation.

May is Bike Month and the Culver City Bicycle Coalition together with other community groups is planning events all month long to encourage people to hop on their bikes and experience the city from a new perspective.

The week of May 6 is Bike to School Week. Children throughout the city are encouraged to bike to school all week long with May 8 designated National Bike to School Day.

El Marino Language School will be celebrating throughout the week by offering incentives to children who bike to school each day, and on National Bike to School Day, the school is organizing a group ride to school to encourage even greater participation. Metro, CicLAvia, Polar Bottles and Lakeshore Learning are providing incentives.

Monday, May 13 marks the beginning of Bike Week LA. Each day is dedicated to a different way of celebrating going car-free. Culver City will be issuing a proclamation celebrating Bike Week at City Hall, Mon. May 13 at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, May 15 is Guided Bike Ride Day and local non-profit, Walk ‘n Rollers will be leading a bike ride along the Ballona Creek and Culver Paths to highlight how fun and easy biking in Culver city can be. Participants are encouraged to meet at the pedestrian bridge on the Ballona Creek bike path, near the tri-school complex.

Thursday, May 16 is Bike to Work Day. The CCBC will be hosting a pit stop in front of Culver City Hall from 7a.m - 9 a.m. with handouts and information on how to safely bike to work on a regular basis. In addition, Culver CityBus and other regional transit agencies will provide free rides to those who board the bus with a bicycle or a helmet. By acknowledging Bike to Work Day and encouraging employees to ride their bikes – even if just for one day, Culver City continues to do its share for clean air, and reduce traffic congestion in our region. Look for additional afternoon pit stops throughout the city.

Sunday, May 19, the CCBC will be hosting a Family Ride to wrap up Bike Week LA and Bike Local Weekend. The ride will be short and family-friendly starting from Culver City’s Town Plaza (near the Culver Hotel) at 11 a.m.

The CCBC supports Bike Month as part of its efforts to encourage more people to bike more often. It’s been widely noted that nearly half of car trips in the U.S. are 3 miles or less, and close to 25 percent are less than a mile. As Culver City continues to work hard to become more bike and pedestrian-friendly, supporting Bike Month is an important way to help people leave their cars at home, creating safer, cleaner communities, by reducing congestion and greenhouse gasses.
