Antioch University Los Angeles President (AULA), Dr. Neal King recently announced his departure in May, after which time he will assume the President position at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California. Current AULA Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Tex Boggs, will step in as Interim President of Antioch University Los Angeles beginning May 1, 2010.
Dr. King is leaving an indelible mark on Antioch University Los Angeles. During his five-year presidency, Dr. King’s vision, energy and commitment to excellence shepherded unprecedented growth and brought national and international prominence to AULA.
“President King leaves an impressive legacy at Antioch University. We are grateful to him for his leadership in guiding AULA into a strong period of growth while ensuring its academic excellence and success as an institution,” said Toni A. Murdock Ph.D., Chancellor of Antioch University. “He has left his mark as a valued leader in the notable history of this institution.”
Under Dr. King’s direction, the AULA campus experienced strong, double-digit growth in both enrollment and revenue posting record financial gains for several consecutive years. AULA was named to the Presidential Award for Community Service Honor Roll for four consecutive years.
“Both honored and excited to join the ITP community, I will be leaving Antioch University with deep respect and fondness for the amazing people, programs, passion and commitment that I have experienced here,” said Dr. King. “It has been my profound and particular honor to serve as president of Antioch University Los Angeles, which I shall long prize.”
Having joined the Antioch University system in the fall of 2004, Dr. King served in a variety of different capacities at both the New England and Los Angeles campuses. At Antioch University New England he was the first ever Chief Academic Officer and also interim President. He joined the Los Angeles campus in 2006 as Dean and in a quick succession moved from Provost & VPAA to acting-CEO. In February 2007, Dr. King became President of Antioch University Los Angeles.
Dr. King’s accomplishments are notable and many. He shepherded the development and launch of the Master of Arts in Urban Sustainability, AULA’s first new degree program in over a decade. He created AULA’s first strategic enrollment management task force, focused on integrating the marketing, communications, admissions, financial aid and institutional research efforts to aid overall recruitment and retention.
As a founding member of the LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education, Dr. King aimed at advancing effective leadership in the realm of post-secondary education. The group supports professional development of LGBTQ leaders in that sector and provides education and advocacy regarding LGBTQ issues within the global academy and for the public at large. AULA hosted the second planning meeting in November 2010.
Dr. King represented AULA at the last two Clinton Global Initiative/University conferences, where AULA was commended for the development of the M.A. in Urban Sustainability program. He is a member of the Executive Committee and is Secretary-General-elect of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP). He was part of IAUP’s delegation to launch the United Nations Academic Impact Initiative and a delegate at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE 2010) in Doha, Qatar.
Dr. Tex Boggs will serve as the new Interim President of AULA beginning May 1, 2011. As a two-term Wyoming Senator (1998 – 2006) and former President of Western Wyoming Community College, he comes to AULA with strong credentials. Dr. Boggs has served as Interim Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs for AULA since July 2009.
