Michael Anthony Mariscal pleads not guilty Wednesday to charges that he murdered two people and wounded a third in a June 2011 shooting at Penmar Park in Venice.
A 20-year-old Culver City man accused of shooting to death two teenagers at Penmar Park in Venice in June 2011 pleaded not guilty Wednesday during his arraignment at the Airport Branch Courthouse. Michael Anthony Mariscal has been charged with capital murder for the slaying of Salvador Diaz Jr. and Alan Mateo, who were both 18. Mariscal also is accused of wounding a third man. Mariscal, wearing a blue Los Angeles County Jail jumpsuit with his wrists and ankles shackled, entered his plea before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Katherine Mader and also denied the special allegations that make him eligible for the death penalty. Public defender Richard Caillouette represented Mariscal and asked that a separate case in which Mariscal is…
Metro's proposal to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School to bring the subway to Century City is opposed by Beverly Hills school and city officials.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors will meet to review objections to a proposed tunnel under Beverly Hills High School that would allow the so-called Subway to the Sea to reach Century City. The high school and Beverly Hills city officials requested today's public hearing because they believe placing the tunnel under the campus would be dangerous. Metro has recommended a Century City station at Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars over an alternative stop at Santa Monica Boulevard and Century Park East, requiring the subway to go under the high school. The Century City Chamber of Commerce and other neighborhood groups have supported the Constellation station. On April 26, the Metro board approved three …
Locals encouraged to ride bikes during "Bike Week L.A."
Today is officially Bike to Work Day. It is part of “Bike Week L.A.” when people around the city are encouraged to ride their bikes to work. Anyone who takes a bike or a bike helmet on board a Metro bus or train today can ride for free. Culver City was recently recognized as a "Bicycle Friendly Community," receiving an honorable mention from the League of American Bicyclists, according to Jim Shanman, co-founder of the Culver City Bicycle Coalition. He said given the fact about half of all local trips people take are three miles or less, biking is the way to go. “By encouraging people to bike or walk to their destinations, so many transformative things happen," Shanman said. "For starters, we encourage the "buy local" philosophy. Local …

The scammers claim that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills.
Southern California Gas Co. warned its customers Monday about a scam in which the culprits tell victims they can get credits on their utility bills if they provide information such as a Social Security number. According to the gas company, scammers have visited customers in person, used social media sites and even sent text messages to victims claiming that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. Officials of Southern California Gas Co. said workers for the utility always carry proper identification when visiting customers, and they do not randomly call or text customers asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information. Customers should verify a person's employment before …

Residents speak out against fee hikes.
Appeals not to raise city fees for non-profits dominated the public hearings at last night’s Culver City Council meeting. A handful of people, including Goran Eriksson, Chairman of the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, voiced their concerns about increases in fees charged by the city. “The majority of increases are two percent, but the business tax is four percent,” he said. “We need to be careful with how the cost of doing business in Culver City compares to our neighboring cities in LA County.” Alan Levy of the La Ballona Valley Bromeliad Society spoke of the society’s concerns that they would have to pay more in the future to use Veterans Memorial Auditorium for its annual Bromeliad Show, a large fundraiser that attracts people from all …

With the dissolution of the Redevelopment Agency and the monies that went with it, City Manager John Nachbar told the City Council Monday night it’s time to think about implementing tax increases.
At Monday night’s City Council meeting, the City’s Chief Financial Officer Jeff Muir provided a brief overview of the City’s proposed fiscal year 2012-2013 budget, and the projections were predictably grim. With the abolition of State redevelopment agencies on Feb. 1, Muir cited the following figures from the report: $7.5 million in transfers and reimbursements to the General Fund have been eliminated, which include 24 full-time dedicated positions at $3.3 million, overhead, rent and other reimbursements at $1.3 million, various other positions at $1.7 million, police OT, code enforcement, graffiti removal and engineering services at $1.2 million. Robert: I never thought of the 7-11 proposal in terms of what it would replace, but the abandoned gas station has been an eyesore of a different sort for a long time. I still worry that the weekday trash problem--the Hansel-and-Gretel trail of fast- and convenience food trash leading from the businesses at Sepulveda and Braddock, and Overland and Braddock to the 3 public schools on Elenda & …   more ›
