The specialty book store ditched the Santa Monica Promenade last year. Now the owners are scurrying to open up shop again in Culver City.
Relocating 100,000 books from their longtime home at the Santa Monica Promenade to Helms Bakery District in Culver City has proven to be a stressful, but amazing experience for the owners of Arcana Books on the Arts. From 1989 until February of last year, the specialized mom and pop book-retailer owned by Lee and Whitney Kaplan rented a space on the Third Street Promenade next door to what is now a Barnes & Noble. The Kaplans grew to detest the area, which had grown from "no man's land" to a "totally depressed walking mall," they told the LA Weekly in a story published Monday. Finally ready to move on and with their sights set on Culver City, they were "wooed" by Wally Mark of Helms Bakery, which offered a space that's like "a big glass …
The scammers claim that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills.
Southern California Gas Co. warned its customers Monday about a scam in which the culprits tell victims they can get credits on their utility bills if they provide information such as a Social Security number. According to the gas company, scammers have visited customers in person, used social media sites and even sent text messages to victims claiming that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. Officials of Southern California Gas Co. said workers for the utility always carry proper identification when visiting customers, and they do not randomly call or text customers asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information. Customers should verify a person's employment before …

The Culver Hotel General Manager Seth Horowitz says the upgrade from 3.5 to 4 stars means the Culver City hotel can compete with hotels in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and West Hollywood.
On May 9, The Culver Hotel was officially upgraded to a 4-star hotel as per Expedia. The new ranking will be rated on Tripadvisor and Hotels.com. “This is wonderful news for Culver City,” Horowitz told Patch via telephone. “The Culver Hotel is also now #1 with TripAdvisor.com in Culver City. Our reviews are wonderful and we have taken the rightful position as the best hotel in Culver City,” he added. Horowitz said the upgrade would also expand the Culver Hotel’s reach to scores of Internet companies that use Expedia’s ratings. “This is much more powerful that AAA’s 4 Diamond ratings,” he said. “We can’t even get a 4 Diamond rating because we simply don’t meet the criteria because [our hotel] doesn’t have a pool.” Horowitz said he’s very …
