Video: $50,000 Reward Offered in Robert Rainey Murder

Speaking on behalf of the Los Angeles City Council at a press conference early Thursday morning,  LAPD Department Capt. Jon Peters of the Pacific Division, West Bureau Homicide Detective John Radtke, and 5th District Councilmember Paul Koretz offered a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of the person or persons who .

The press conference was held at 7 a.m. Thursday, outside Rainey's office at 9225 Venice Blvd., where the 54-year-old Culver City resident was brutally beaten to death on May 31, 2012.

In offering up the reward, Koretz said, "We hope that this reward and the publicity around this reward will help [find the murderer]. "We’re here today because this brutal crime needs to be solved and we can’t settle for anything less."

Los Angeles Times Media Writer James Rainey - Robert Rainey's brother - also spoke briefly. He brought his daughter with him to the press conference and blinked back tears as he spoke.

"As you can see, we're out here on Venice Boulevard. It's a tremendously busy place even at this time in the morning. So, we're just really hoping someone saw something three weeks ago on the 31st that can help us figure out what happened to my brother.''

Rainey went on to say, "Whoever did this is not the kind of person that any of us want out on the street."

Lt. Radtke said there are no supects in the case at this point. Asked about whether video surveillance tapes had led to any leads, Radtke said no. He did say that this was a good opportunity for businesses to ensure that their cameras are in fact working.

"There are some cameras here that ideally would have been functional, [that] probably would have caught the perpetrator," he said.

Following the press conference Rainey told Patch that his brother had already been cremated and that the family was still deciding what to do with the ashes. He also noted that there will be a private memorial for friends and family for Robert Rainey this coming Saturday morning.
