School Music Programs Feel the Budget Crunch

Middle school music teacher Joe Nazzaretta talks with Patch about how the state budget crisis is affecting his classes.

When the Culver City Unified school board realized that a 50 percent chunk would have to be cut from the middle school music program's staff for the 2010-'11 school year—leaving the campus with one music teacher instead of two—board member Karlo Silbiger said it was "No. 1 in terms of tough cuts."

The intermediate and advanced band and choir classes have grown by approximately 20 students each, and former middle school choir teacher Paul Witt is now helming the elementary school music programs.

Culver City Middle School music teacher Joe Nazzaretta gave Patch an exclusive performance, and discussed the future of arts education in Culver City.
