Royal/T Prepares to Close This Week

The Japanese cafe and art space will celebrate its closing with two pop-up dinners.

After five years, is bidding adieu to Culver City. The Japanese art space and café will officially close its doors on Friday and is celebrating with a two-night pop-up culinary experience.

The 12-course, $45 dinner will be an “amazing and fun” event featuring sangria, beer and a tapas tasting menu, said owner Susan Hancock.

If this week’s events are anything like previous ones, success will also be on the menu. Hancock said it is the people of Culver City who have made all the difference for her business over the years.

“The people are just so nice,” she said. “Everybody’s really very welcoming. The community really came out for us.”

Hancock said her plan was always to close after five years when her lease was up.

“It was always meant to be a five-year project,” Hancock said.

Now hundreds of events later, Hancock said she has plenty of fond memories to take with her, including a Hello Kitty event that attracted a total of 90,000 people over the course of three weeks, she said.

“We always wanted people to feel like Royal/T was magical, and many people said they felt that way and that made me happy,” Hancock said.

Even though Royal/T is closing, Hancock has no plans to slow down. She plans to do art consulting, organize worldwide art trips, do pop-up shops with various brands and work with companies “to support museums and artists to help them achieve their corporate goals through the art world,” among other things, Hancock said.

Perhaps above all, she has no regrets.

“I feel good,” Hancock said. “It was so successful, and I thank everyone here in Culver City.”

The 12-course, tapas tasting menu will be available from 6-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday nights. Advance reservations can be made online.
