Albertsons to Shut Down 27 Stores

, Albertsons reported that it was planning to layoff 2,200-2,500 employees from its 247 stores across California and Nevada.

The was among those affected, but despite the employee layoffs the store still didn’t manage to survive and officially closed last month.

Now, Albertsons’ parent company has announced it will shut down an additional 27 of its “underperforming” stores including 19 in Southern California.

“These decisions are never easy because of the impact a store closure has on our team members, our customers and our communities,” said Wayne Sales, president/CEO of Supervalu Inc. “[Wednesday’s] announcement reflects our commitment to move with a greater sense of urgency to reduce costs and improve shareholder value.”

While the company did not announce the specific stores that would be shut down, The Los Angeles Times reported that among those on the chopping block are stores in Long Beach, Glendale, Northridge and Van Nuys.

The affected Albertsons stores are slated to close by December 2012.
